Life on a New land

Life on a new land

Beginning a new life in a new country can be both exciting and intimidating. It includes starting a new chapter in your life where you have to adapt to a new culture, and make new friends. The challenges and the opportunities that come with it, and the tough one is to cope with the changes. I have recently moved to Canada from India and today I am taking a closer look at what it's like to start a new life in an unknown place.

Taking Time:

I felt It's important to take the time to get to know the culture of your new home, especially if you have children.  For my husband, my four-year-old daughter and me , adapting to this new culture meant learning how to take public transportation seamlessly like others and winter precautions like bundling up when going outside, learning about our neighborhood because it's not an easy task to sit at home all the time. Of course we had heard from people and seen in the videos and pictures, but we were definitely amazed about many things here. One of the biggest surprises for us was how quiet our new home and new neighborhood was compared to our old one! 😉😉 With an open mind and a willingness to learn, we are trying to make the most of our move and enjoy all that this fascinating culture and country has to offer.

Comforting the little one:

With different cultures, languages, and lifestyles, it can be difficult to find someone who shares your interests and values. One of the best ways to make new friends is by respecting personal space. But we are from India and how do i explain about personal space to my four year old when she randomly walks up to a kid to talk to and to play with them???

Schooling is a little different here. You don't choose the school, rather the school chooses you and this was a difficult one to swallow. Blame it on Covid or our over protective nature, but the independent way of upbringing here is definitely an eye opener for me and my husband. Apparently, communicating effectively in school is no longer a major concern for us. She now has to do everything by herself, from taking off her jacket to taking the bus without supervision. It's taking some time to sink in. However, these were some anticipated changes. So we are sipping it one at a time.

Comforting ourselves:

It is also important to adjust to new surroundings and lifestyle. Sometimes I feel less efficient in our daily life. Changing the mindset is helpful by remembering this is a time to realign and redefine yourself. So How am I coping???

I am trying to stay active, eat well, and get enough sleep. I stay positive and be patient with myself during the adjustment process.  Not all change is bad, and not all good change is easy. Positive changes do trigger a stress response. So it's time to be calm and go easy.

After all, nothing is permanent in this world, not even the word “New”.
